About our Suffolks

Allendale 821/96 – Champion ram Adelaide 1997 and later sold for the Australian auction record of $10750 at the stud’s annual on-property auction.

Allendale Suffolk stud commenced in 1931 and is currently the second oldest flock in Australia. Top quality ewes from the disposal of Mr HC Wright, Northfield SA and a further draft from Buckland Park, Virgina SA were the foundation stock. These being all rich in blood from imported UK sires Brookhill “Bismark” and Risby “Tory”. The ram Liberty Hall “Monarch” was purchased from Mr JT Murray, Woodside SA and was the sire that stamped the type of Suffolk bred at Allendale.

Benacre “Comet” was imported by Allendale from the UK in 1952 to be one of the last sires permitted to be imported from there. Other select infusions were added, most notably from “Pembry” and “Stonehaven” studs in the 60’s and 70’s while later infusions have included rams from prominent New Zealand studs “Punchbowl”, “Toi-Puke” and “Waterton”.

The stud has had wonderful success over the years at the Adelaide, Melbourne and Perth Royal Shows with numerous champions. Allendale has held the Australian auction record price for a Suffolk ram on at least 4 occasions, currently standing at $10750 set in 1997 for the stud’s Adelaide champion, when sold at the annual on-property sale.

Allendale 1543/02 – Adelaide and Melbourne Royal Shows Champion Suffolk ram and interbreed reserve champion 2003. A1543 is just one of the numerous champion rams at Royal Shows bred by Allendale.

The Suffolk offering at this annual sale consists of approx 10 stud rams, 30 flock rams and 20 stud ewes with buyers coming from all Australian states. Exports have been made to several countries over the years with many going to New Zealand.

Lambplan has been used since 1989 as a performance measure and in continuing selection for the outstanding and renowned fleshing qualities of Allendale Suffolks. The stud joins approx 120 ewes annually.
